In 1939, after five years of development, the U.S. Army ordered production of the M3A1 Scout
Car. It was based on a White Motor Company heavy-duty short wheelbase 4x4 truck, and had
an open top body and engine cover made of light armor plate. It was commonly armed with
.30 or .50 caliber machine guns, and could carry up to 8 men. It was used in all theaters,
wherever U.S. forces fought, but due to its light armor and armament, it was typically relegated
to rear area actions. Although it was an older design, it was rugged, reliable and easy to
maintain, with almost 21,000 units built from 1939 to 1944.
Over the course of putting this feature together, I somehow lost my notes as to the owner or home
location of these vehicles. If you own one of these vehicles, or have information about them,
please contact me HERE.
