The M5 Stuart was derived from the earlier M3 model.   It was developed mainly because the Army was having a harder time getting the radial engines used in the M3's, which were in greater demand for aircraft.   So the Stuart was redesigned using two Cadillac V8 engines.   The major difference visually was the raised sides at the rear of the hull, and performance wise, the M5 could reach 40mph, which was almost 10mph faster than the radial equipped M3.   The M5's twin Cadillac engines were rated at 110 hp each, and they used "Hydramatic" automatic transmissions.   As an added benefit, the twin V8s ran quieter than the radial engined M3's, and currently, the Cadillac engines are easier to get parts for.
